Thanet council is warning isle residents to be on their guard for scam callers.
The authority says some residents have been receiving fraudulent calls suggesting that their property is in the wrong council tax band and advising that the caller’s company can arrange for the banding to be reduced for a charge.
A TDC spokesman said: “Our advice is to remember that you can challenge your property’s council tax banding for free by contacting the Valuation Office Agency (VOA)
“Do ask for the cold-caller’s head office contact number. Please check that the cold caller has ended the call properly- can you hear a dial tone before dialling the number.
“If you have any concerns please make sure you get a dial tone before calling the council or the VOA to check their story.
“Inform the police if you believe someone is impersonating staff from the local council or the VOA.”
Contact Trading Standards if you feel you have been the victim of a council tax scam.
Do not:
Give your bank details to anyone.
Feel under pressure to pay an up-front-fee.
Accept the cold callers’ claim about your council tax without proof or evidence of what they claim.
Speak to anyone who does not give you their company address or contact details
