Margate restaurant Olivo will be serving up free Christmas Day lunch for people in need

People in need are invited to Christmas lunch at Olivo

Margate restaurant owners Dave and Sarah Carnevale will be serving up free Christmas Day lunches for the homeless, elderly and anyone in need.

The couple, who run Italian restaurant Olivo Margate in Market Place, are unable to spend the holiday with their families and so have decided to share their day with people who may need a meal and some company.

Dave said: “We give out food to those who are homeless weekly and for me it is a totally normal thing to do all year long.

“We want to make it extra special for people in need this Christmas. We are not going to see our own families but we are very traditional and love big family Christmas dinners, so we decided to do something for the community.”

The couple posted to social media to spread the word and say they want the limelight to be about making sure no-one has to be alone and hungry on Christmas Day. They will be serving up soup, pizza and cake between noon and 4pm.

Dogs are welcome too and anyone who would like to help out is invited to get in touch.

The response to the post has been massive with numerous shares and good wishes.

Dave said: “We didn’t expect our free Christmas Day lunch to get so much positive feedback and support. We are overwhelmed, and it shows us that it is the right thing to do. We don’t want personal attention or glory, this is about people in need, not us.”
