Youngsters from the Scout Section of 1st Westgate-on-Sea have been creating a meaningful tribute for Remembrance Day to honour not only the soldiers who sacrificed their lives but also the animals that served alongside them.
The Scouts decided to create silhouettes dedicated to both the traditional red poppy and the lesser-known purple poppy. The purple poppy specifically commemorates the animals who have lost their lives in conflict.
The initiative was the Scout members’ own idea and, with the support of adult volunteers, they brought their vision to life, crafting both red and purple poppy silhouettes with great care and dedication.
The silhouettes are now displayed on the fence at The Billabong, the home of 1st Westgate-on-Sea Scout Group, in St Crispin’s Road, Westgate-on-Sea.
Gavin Wallis (Akela), from 1st Westgate-on-Sea Scout Group, said: “The display serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made in times of war and the importance of remembering all who have served.
“[We] acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the young people and adult volunteers in our Scout Section, who continue to uphold the values of remembrance and respect within our community.”
Congratulations to our young people who have worked so hard to create these beautiful displays all over Thanet. My grandfather died in the First World War so I promised my father I would carry on remembering. Shall be happy to pass the responsibility on to the younger generation. We must never forget.
