Lighthouses as practical navigation aids, lighthouses as symbols of safety and protection, lighthouses as a shared commons, and lighthouses as part of our historic landscape are some of the ideas which will all be explored at September’s First Friday.
The monthly night of inquiry, art, and creative fun is a co-creation between Marine Studios and Dan Thompson’s Seaside History Club. He has produced postcard-sized paintings of over 100 UK lighthouses and promises more are on the way.
He has also made a template for people wanting to cut out and make their own lighthouse on the night, and a limited edition print of Kent lighthouses.
Around the studio there will also be works by other artists including Margo in Margate, Martin Le Lapin, and Sylvie Howitt. Historic navigation maps and charts will be on show too.
Marine Studios will be launching its latest fundraiser, a pair of exclusive teatowels designed by Mini Moderns. Usually stocked in places like John Lewis, the mid-century inspired wallpaper and homewares from cult British design duo Keith Stephenson and Mark Hampshire are highly collectible. One of their designs for Marine Studios includes an image of Margate’s 1950s lighthouse.
First Friday was established as a monthly event when Marine Studios opened in 2009. Each month, people come together around a topic, with artists and writers providing prompts and activities. The event is free and suitable for all ages.
