Dispersal orders are in place for parts of Thanet this weekend, granting additional powers to police officers to deter nuisance behaviour.
From 2pmtoday (July 3), anyone suspected of behaving in an antisocial manner in Broadstairs, Westwood Cross shopping centre, central Ramsgate or Margate town centre will be asked to move on or face arrest if they fail to do so.
The same applies to anyone behaving antisocially on or near the beaches and at the railway stations.
Anyone returning after being asked to leave also risks being taken into custody. Items which are being used in an antisocial manner, such as loud music equipment, may also be seized.
Superintendent Pete Steenhuis from Kent Police said: “Our coastal towns are wonderful places to enjoy the warm, sunny weather and we want to keep them that way.
“The overwhelming majority of people who choose to socialise in these areas do so respectfully and responsibly, and anyone who would seek to spoil it for others should expect to be dealt with swiftly and robustly.’
The dispersal orders are expected to remain in place for 48 hours.
Nationally this is such a strange phenomenon. It’s been happening for so many decades too. In the coastal towns along both the Kent and Essex sides of the Thames Estuary. Right around Thanet. Nowhere else in the country though. Brighton has its own particular forms of violence, but that town is its own worst enemy and has been since it was called Brighthelmstone.
Nobody from Bristol travels to Weston Super Mare or Brixham to cause havoc. Mancunians don’t travel to Blackpool for a ruck. Folk from Lincoln don’t travel to Skegness for a dust up. Why do those from London insist upon doing so down here?
Maybe it’s a question that some M.A. Social Science/Criminology students at U.K.C. might like to research in conjunction with local constabulary?

I don’t know how Dreamland get away with it. I live two miles away but can still hear some of their performances. It must be intolerable for those living nearby.
