Minster Church of England Primary School is celebrating a major achievement after being awarded the prestigious Platinum OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Award, the highest recognition possible within the national OPAL programme.
The Platinum Award marks years of dedicated work to transform playtimes into inclusive, high-quality experiences that support every child’s wellbeing, development and learning.
Only a small number of schools nationally reach this level, placing Minster among those recognised for exceptional practice.
At Minster, play is understood as far more than a break in the school day. It is a vital part of childhood that supports physical health, emotional wellbeing, social development and learning.
OPAL, whose work is grounded in over 20 years of research, describes play as “the process through which children learn everything that they need to know that cannot be taught” – helping to wire the brain, build relationships and develop resilience and independence.
Richard Russell, Minster’s Head of School, said: “This Platinum OPAL Award is a huge moment of pride for our school. It reflects the hard work, commitment and belief of our staff, children and families, who together have transformed play into something deeply meaningful.
“We firmly believe that children thrive when they are trusted, challenged and given rich opportunities to play. This award celebrates not just our playground, but our whole-school culture.”
Since beginning its OPAL journey, the impact across the school has been striking. The school says playtimes are calmer, happier and more purposeful. Children are more confident, creative and collaborative, and outdoor spaces have become stimulating environments where pupils of all ages can explore, imagine, build, negotiate and take safe risks.
Many OPAL schools report that these improvements also lead to better behaviour, improved wellbeing and more settled learning back in the classroom.
Georgia Taylor, Curriculum Lead for Play, said: “Through OPAL we have seen how powerful play really is. Children are learning to problem-solve, cooperate, self-regulate and take responsibility for themselves and others. These skills sit at the heart of learning and life. Our curriculum for play is now just as thoughtful and intentional as any other area of school life.”
The success of OPAL at Minster has been driven by a passionate Play Team working alongside staff across the school, supported by pupils, families and the wider community. Parents have donated resources, offered ideas and shared overwhelmingly positive feedback about the difference OPAL has made to their children’s happiness, confidence and enjoyment of school.
Hazel Elks, Play Coordinator, said: “This award belongs to our whole community. The children have embraced the freedom and responsibility that OPAL brings, and it has been incredible to watch them flourish.
“Staff have worked tirelessly to change mindsets, support children’s play and create an environment where everyone feels included. Play is joyful, but it is also serious in its impact.”
