In a display of community spirit, local councillors and Birchington Lodge members organised a special veterans dinner to celebrate St George’s Day.
The event successfully brought together some 40 attendees, including veterans and their families, for camaraderie, food, and shared memories.
The dinner was made possible through generous donations from local businesses, highlighting the strong support for veterans within the Birchington community.
Notable contributions came from Food International, which provided a variety of desserts, Morre Ice Cream, and the Vintage Pantry, which supplied an array of meats. Arnold From of Darlene’s Convenience Store on Margate High Street played a key role by providing various items and promoting the event.
Councillors Marc Rattigan and Cedric Townsend expressed their gratitude to both the volunteers and the local businesses that contributed to the initiative.
“It’s fantastic to see our community come together to celebrate and honour our veterans, especially on St George’s Day,” said Cllr Rattigan. “Events like this not only recognize their sacrifices but also foster a sense of unity and respect among us all.”
Lodge members Ken Walters and Roy Kay were instrumental in the planning and execution of the event, working tirelessly alongside the councillors to create a memorable experience for everyone involved.
Attendees enjoyed a roast lunch followed by a selection of desserts, shared stories, and forged connections with fellow veterans. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and appreciation, reflecting the importance of acknowledging the contributions of these brave individuals.
Plans are already underway for next year’s event, with the aim of hosting an even larger gathering that celebrates the bravery and commitment of veterans, ensuring they remain a vital part of the community conversation.
