A small, volunteer-run adult literacy and numeracy group is searching for funding or access to a free central venue to continue supporting local residents with no comparable provision in the area.
The group is led by volunteer Liz Dungar, who spent 12 years teaching English and Maths to adults at The Gap Community Project in Broadstairs. The classes closed unexpectedly last year but determined not to lose the community that had formed, Lizzie began hiring space independently to support her young adult students with twice-weekly sessions.
Liz says the learners, many facing challenges including mental health difficulties, dyslexia, autism, or physical disabilities, are often overlooked in traditional education settings. Classes provide not only practical skills, but also a supportive environment where participants rebuild confidence, form friendships, and improve overall wellbeing.
Liz said: “At present, there is simply nothing else locally offering this kind of support for adults like these learners.”
However, the group is currently self-funded and on-going room hire and basic costs are becoming unsustainable. A small amount of funding, donations, or the offer of a free meeting space in central Broadstairs would secure the future of the sessions.
Liz added: “In this day and age, so much seems determined by ticking boxes. Unfortunately, my students do not tick the right boxes. I believe that should not be a barrier to them being able to have opportunity to improve their literacy and numeracy skills”
One of Liz’s students said: “Before I started these classes I was very closed off. I had been to English classes before. (These) classes are different. I feel more welcome and comfortable here. I have made friends which I never thought I would. My mind feels lighter and I look forward to coming in.’
Another added: “Due to my learning disability, it takes time for me to process change. I also have anxieties in meeting new people, settings and surroundings. Sadly, there was no other project , which made me feel safe, encouraged and able to learn.”
Isle organisations, businesses, or community groups able to offer a free or low-cost space in central Broadstairs to support adult literacy and numeracy classes or individuals who are willing and able to contribute funding are encouraged to get in touch.
Liz said: “Literacy and numeracy are life skills that every one of us needs to function day to day. As a society, we should ensure that no one is excluded from the chance to learn and build confidence.”
