Access to the lower promenade at the Lido has been fenced off due to safety issues with the steel structure that support the promenade.
The area was sealed off last Friday (February 6) and will remain closed while the owners of the Lido have worked carried out to make it secure.
Thanet council will be setting out diversions due to the closure impacting pedestrian access from Cliftonville to Margate along the lower promenade.
There are two alternative routes along the upper promenade, one with steps and one which is accessible. Signs will be in place to advise the public of the closure.
A Thanet council spokesperson said: “”Access to the lower promenade on the seaward side of the Lido, on Cliff Terrace, was closed on Friday 6 February.
“This is necessary on safety grounds and follows a structural report carried out by the owners of the Lido. The report identified issues with the steel structure that supports the promenade, above the former changing rooms of the Lido.
“The land is the responsibility of the Lido, and has been fenced off by the owners.
“The landowners will be required to carry out works to secure the structure. At this stage, a timescale has not been provided for the duration of this work.”

This is terrible news ! What will happen for Margate Soul Weekend this is the access area.
The site is all site is decaying. I worked there in the 80s. We not allowed to take vehicles on The Sun Terrace. In case they went though the floor. Only a few years they had a major collapse on the Sun Terrace. Now it is a car park. Also a JCB went though the bottom prom. It needs a proper survey.
Even the makeshift rusty fencing closing the promenade off to vehicles behind the latest security fencing is dilapidated.
It’s about time a compulsory purchase of the site was made at less than the going rate to secure it’s future, or is the local authority happy to see it cave in on itself so even more housing can be developed ? There will be a lot of heavy lifting involved in the clearance needed so can knock the purchase price right down.
