Thanet historians Benedict Kelly and Gerald Tripp have published a new book exploring the history of parts of central Ramsgate which are now mainly occupied by a multi-storey carpark, the Argyle Centre and a Travelodge.
The book deals in detail with the following streets: Part of Queen Street, Charlotte Court, York Street, Bath Place, Goldsmid Place, York Terrace, Farley Place, Leopold Street, Neptune’s Row, Princes Street and Cliff Street.
Much of the area was demolished in two waves by Ramsgate Council; first in the late 1930s in a slum clearance programme and another area in the 1960s in a comprehensive development scheme. In the early 1800s the area around Leopold-street was a boatyard.
The book charts the development of the area into streets. Each property is listed with a table, giving the names of the various occupiers, below the table are details of the people who lived at the address, including family trees and newspaper reports.
The book, titled Ramsgate Streets, is printed in A4 format with more than 700 pages. It is priced at £30.

The book will be launched at the Montefiore Arms on Thursday 18th December at 7:30pm.
A brief talk will be given and old photographs of the area shown on a screen.
