Work has begun to create the ‘Friends Garden’- a new people and bee-friendly space in Ellington Park, Ramsgate.
The area, next to the popular Ellington Park Community Café will include new benches, an accessible path and a number of pollinator-friendly plants.
The project is a collaboration between the Friends of Ellington Park and Thanet council, and is being part-funded with £2000 from TDC’s Thanet Community Lotto Grants Fund and £5,000 from the Friends’ own funds.
A spokesperson for the Friends said: “We are really delighted that work is now under way to enhance this piece of the park that is currently unused.
“A survey of park users in May asked respondents to describe in one word what they thought about the space as it was. Respondents used terms such as ‘bland’, ‘wasted’ and ‘potential’; while support was expressed for the space to be transformed into something much prettier – where people could sit and enjoy the views of the park, next to the Café and very close to the play area.
“Crucially, at a time when our plant and wildlife ecosystems are under such strain, the area will be populated with bee-friendly plants”.
The project is expected to be completed in time for the spring.
