More than 100 objections have been lodged against plans to build 91 properties on land off Millennium Way in Broadstairs.
ASQ Partners LTD wants to build the 91 properties comprising 56 flats and 35 houses across five blocks of four, three and two-storey buildings.
The development is to the south of Copperfield Court assisted living home and close to close to the rear of Tesco Extra and the new Thanet Health Hub.
Planning documents say the aim is to create: “a well-designed, landscape led housing scheme that will feature a main public route with tributaries formed from open spaces and links extant approvals and Millennium Way to the wider context.
“The proposal should look to form the first step in what we hope will be a new boulevard along Millennium Way with gaps in the layout to present unique views into the site to the green spaces set within.
“For the residents of the site, we hope to design a proposal that ensures each property looks out into a series of green spaces that will provide an excellent outlook for each while fostering a sense of community around spaces that can be used by and appreciated by residents for a series of activities.”
However, there have been numerous objections lodged with concerns ranging from the height of the proposed development to traffic and parking problems.
One objection says: “The inclusion of five 4 storey buildings, completely out of keeping with local architecture, will overshadow and overlook the surrounding area including the adjacent care home.
“The design of the houses is described as ‘contemporary’ but they are featureless, very angular and constructed from dark coloured materials.
“This development crams people into buildings in close proximity to each other, generating the likelihood of social tension.”
Another says: “Whilst I appreciate the need for more housing, the erection of five four storey buildings in the area would significantly affect the view from ours and many others properties. All businesses and buildings in the area are no more than two storeys, including multiple new buildings. The council surely can’t allow that to go ahead.
“All roads in the area are already under significant pressure, constantly busy and reducing our safety and enjoyment of our homes. This development will significantly impact the value of our property and likely the quality and accessibility of services in our area.”
Another respondent points out that the land is allocated for commercial use rather than housing.
A number of amendments have been made to the plans, the majority altering the location of properties and adding doorstep play space.
