St Laurence-in-Thanet CE Junior Academy was alive with music and movement on Tuesday as Rich Rhythms arrived for a full day of exciting drumming workshops.
The usual morning routine was replaced by a hall filled with djembes, hand drums and upbeat rhythms. Each class enjoyed a lively, hands-on session led by the visiting musician, who guided children through call-and-response games, layered rhythms and group performances. Laughter, teamwork and plenty of noise could be heard throughout the day.
The workshop gave pupils the chance to discover the joy of making music together in real time, without needing any prior experience. Children learned how rhythm travels through a group, how to lead and how to follow and how music can create a powerful sense of togetherness.
Logan in Year 3 said: “I liked when we all played the big rhythm together because it made the whole hall shake. I had never played a drum before and now I want to do it again.”
Teachers said they were delighted with the enthusiasm shown by pupils and thanked Rich Rhythms for bringing energy, creativity and an unforgettable musical experience to the school.
Miss McQuillen, Music Lead, said: “It was wonderful to see every child so engaged and confident. Workshops like this remind pupils that music is something you feel as well as hear and it was lovely watching them create such a strong sense of togetherness through rhythm.”
