Marine Drive in Margate received a dystopian makeover as filming for BBC series The Dream Lands continued yesterday (April 30).
A wrecked car, rubbish, sofas and a ‘shop basket’ in the Victorian shelter, bill posters for missing people and gigs – including one for The Libertines in 2030- plus a warning to stay out of the sea due to ‘toxic water’ were all in evidence.
The former Primark store is currently serving as the props room.
The Dream Lands features actors including Pascale Kann, Tareq Al-Jeddal, Ruby Bridal and Anna Friel, Connor Swindells, Clara Rugaard, Katherine Parkinson, Golda Rosheuvel, Jacob Greenway, Scarlett Rayner and Raphael Sowole.
It is based on the novel Dreamland by Ramsgate author Rosa Rankin-Gee.
Rosa Rankin-Gee’s book, published by Scribner, is set in the near future, where Margate is again in decline and rising seas regularly flood the town.
It is being created by BBC, SISTER, and Universal International Studios.
However, not everyone is impressed with one resident saying they have lodged a complaint with the council that the set is ‘disgusting’ and will ‘drive tourists away.’
Filming continues in the town until May 10.

I did wonder about that. Such a shame. Margate consists of more than the grubby seafront. The bays either side, and the clifftop walks are beautiful. Shame the tourist info doesn’t promote that more.
