Crews are in Margate to begin filming BBC drama The Dream Lands.
The six part series is based on the novel Dreamland by Ramsgate author Rosa Rankin-Gee and will have sets at Arlington House and Market Square.
Production company Sister plans to film in Margate from now to May 10.
There will be 24 hour security at the sets and a period of reinstatement after filming from May 12-16.
The TV adaptation is being made by the BBC, Sister, and Universal International Studios. Written by BAFTA award winner Kayleigh Llewellyn, it stars Anna Friel, Katherine Parkinson, and newcomer Pascale Kann in the lead role, Chance.
Production company Sister says: “We will be filming some exciting scenes involving action, smoke, along with shouting and loud noises. Some characters will be dressed in military-style outfits.”
There’s a chance to explore the real world behind Rosa Rankin Gee’s book Dreamland this Saturday (26th April).
An hour-long walk led by experienced History Walker Dan Thompson will take in the real locations behind the book which has inspired the TV series.
The book is set in a dystopian near-future, where rising sea levels have led to people leaving the Isle of Thanet to live elsewhere. So, the walk will look at Margate’s lost rivers and marshes, alongside an exploration of the rises and falls of Margate’s history as a seaside resort and place to live.
Dan’s Dreamland walk lasts about an hour, and is on level ground, but may include some steps. Meeting at the front of Margate Station at 11.15am, walk ends in Margate’s Old Town. The walk is free or pay what you want.
Dan is an award-winning artist and writer who trained as a Margate History Walker with Lynn Jackson. She founded Margate History Walkers to train local people, so they could share their heritage.
Dan has previously led local walks focused on the First World War, TS Eliot, and Margate’s women.
“I really enjoyed Dan’s ‘Women of Margate’ walk,” says travel writer Rachel Mills, “because it was great to be on the spot where history happened, and I found out things I didn’t know ”
He leads another walk on Saturday 3rd May, looking at Margate’s rock ‘n’ roll history as part of Hipsville festival. That walk leaves Marine Studios in Albert Terrace at 11am.
