A section of the A256 Ramsgate Road at Richborough is blocked due to a waste tanker truck overturning on the carriageway this morning (March 5).
The incident happened at around 9am on the A256 Ramsgate Road northbound between the Sandwich Bypass at the Pfizer’s roundabout and the Richborough roundabout by the former power station site.
Police and South East Coast Ambulance service (SECAmb) were called to the scene.
A SECAmb spokesperson said: “SECAmb were called at approx. 09:01 this morning (05/03/25) to reports of a single vehicle RTC involving a lorry on the A256 in Sandwich. Crews assessed and treated one patient at the scene before discharging them from our care.”
A Kent Police spokesperson added: “Kent Police officers are currently at the scene of an overturned lorry on the A256, between Sandwich and Cliffsend, which was reported shortly after 9am on Wednesday 5 March.
“The A256 is currently partially blocked north-bound near Richborough. No serious injuries have been reported and emergency services are working to clear the road.”
11am: One lane is now open. The AA traffic site says “Sensors show traffic is now able to pass the scene.”

It’s really easy, if the tanker is full or empty very little chance of it happening, but half full or even a third full of liquid, the sudden movement of the liquid against the side of the tanker causes the momentum like a wave to roll the vehicle, which can happen at roundabouts. I have seen a number of milk tankers collecting from farms, have this happen to them over the years, even if the driver isn’t over the speed limit.
