Community: Tree planting, wellness weekend, past and present sale, Big Sing and Copperfield Court

Wellness session at Monkton Nature Reserve's environmental education centre

Thanet tree planting

Tree planting sessions are taking place across Thanet as part of the council’s plans to create mini woodlands.

Thanet only has 4% of tree cover, compared to a national average of 16%, and so the plan is to increase the coverage and give more people access to the nature that it provides.

The next planting sessions are:

– Garlinge Recreation Ground – Tuesday 14 January
– Dane Valley in Margate – Tuesday 4 February
– Northdown Park in Margate – six days during February half term (Monday 17 to Saturday 22 February)

Sign up to volunteer! Equipment, instructions and snacks will be provided.

January Wellness Weekend

Hosted by The Psorcery ProjectJanuary Wellness Weekend consists of two events at two separate locations covering both the 18th and 19th January; the weekend immediately before Blue Monday, a day that has come to be recognised as the most difficult day of the year in terms of mental health and struggles with low mood, anxiety and depression.

Both of these day-retreats are aimed at boosting resilience, improving overall health, wellness and happiness and supporting attendees toward ongoing success and achievement, however that looks to each individual.

The first of these events, Beating Blue Monday, hosted at Monkton Nature Reserve will take place on Saturday 18th January, 10.30am to 3pm, and will feature a range of activities including guided meditations, energy healing, yoga, manifestation workshop and more as well as educational talks, including one from special guest host Elaine Dunne from Hopeville Therapeutic Services.

Tickets for this event are £25 per person and will need to be booked through Monton Nature Reserve’s event ticket portal, or by following the links on the Beating Blue Monday page on our website.

Broadstairs Smile Sunday takes place the next day (19th January) from 10.30am to 3.30pm at Retort House in Broadstairs town and will also feature yoga, guided meditations and breathwork but with a slightly different focus more aimed at managing and maintaining long-term wellness and so will also involve a herbal supplements workshop as well as different talks, including a presentation from guest host Leila Zintilis, who delivered a remarkable talk at our previous Hormonal Health Hack event in November.

Tickets for this event are just £10 per person and can be booked directly through the Psorcery Project website.

The Psorcery Project is a local venture aimed at supporting people to take charge of and achieve their best possible states of health, success and self-actualisation by combining ancient philosophy and wellness techniques with modern scientific understanding to ensure all practices are safe, effective and accessible for all.

Copperfield Court

Copperfield Court care home, part of Oyster Care Homes, is delighted to invite the local community to a free informational event on Thursday, 30th January, from 4 PM to 6 PM. This session will help individuals and families navigate the often-complex world of care funding, providing essential guidance and practical advice.

The event will feature expert speakers from the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA), along with local estate agents and solicitors, offering a comprehensive overview of funding options, government support, and the role of assets like property in eligibility decisions. Attendees will gain invaluable insights into planning for care and what to do when financial resources are limited.

Em Dean, COO at Oyster Care Homes, said: “These events are about empowering families with the knowledge they need to make confident, informed decisions about care. We encourage everyone in the community to join us and ask the questions that matter most to them.”

This event is free to attend, but spaces are limited, so please do call the care home on 01843 423207 to book your place.

  1. If any of the organisations involved in the tree-planting would like a donation of a healthy Christmas tree (approx. 6 ft.) grown in a pot for the last five years, please let me know. Nordmann Spruce type. We are getting a bit too old to get it into the house as it’s pretty heavy, and it really needs to be planted in the ground now. Available for collection from our house, first come, first served. You can message me on Facebook.
