A crackdown on delivery drivers in Thanet without the correct documentation, licence and insurance, has resulted in five vehicles being seized by neighbourhood officers.
Last Friday [25 October], 28 delivery drivers using cars and scooters for their work on the isle were stopped and spoken to by officers. Assisted by Home Office staff, checks were made by officers to ensure each driver had proper documentation, including the correct business insurance.
Five vehicles were seized due to the drivers not being insured, and a total of seven people were reported for traffic offences including not having a licence, and no valid MOT.
A 38-year-old woman from Ramsgate, who was not a delivery driver, was also arrested during the evening, on suspicion of drug driving and driving without insurance. She was released on bail pending further enquiries.
Sergeant James Cattermole said: “People who regularly use vehicles on public roads as part of their job should ensure they are fully aware of legislation surrounding driving for a living. If they are not insured, they present a risk to themselves and others if a collision takes place.
“Like all road users, they have a role to play in keeping the roads safe.
“It is important during the colder wetter weather that they carry out regular checks on the vehicles to ensure they are kept in a roadworthy condition. Taking the time to check lights and brakes, and making sure they have the correct business insurance can mean the difference between working or watching your vehicle get seized and a trip to court.”
