Margate Job Centre security staff join week long strike in pay dispute

Hundreds of Job Centre security guards across the South East and East of England – including at Margate -begin a week long walk out today [Monday] as a pay dispute escalates.

The guards – employed by private outsourcing giant G4S – will walk out until Saturday 6 July.

The GMB union says workers do a difficult, dangerous job; with research showing more than 80 percent regularly suffer abuse, including being savaged in the neck by dogs, punched, attacked with screwdrivers and customers behaving ‘like wild animals’.

In total, 90 per cent of the guards are now paid just the minimum wage.

GMB says that meanwhile the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has shelled out £211 million to G4s since Dec 2022 – despite staff costs being just £161 million during the same period, a difference of £50 million.

ACAS is attempting to arrange talks to settle the dispute, but the DWP has declined to participate.

Eamon O’Hearn, GMB National Officer, said:“It’s not rocket science – if the DWP and G4S want to end this dispute, make sure these guards are paid enough to live on.

“G4S has been handed millions by the Government, yet our members can barely afford to feed their families.

“The work they do is hard; they are attacked with alarming regularity just for doing their job.

“The least they expect is to be paid a proper wage.”

  1. G4s make large donations to the Conservative Party in return for lucrative contracts, if that’s not corrupt I don’t know what is. This is the same company that couldn’t deal with the Olympics and they are yet to be called in to take over yet they’re still given contracts by the government on Friday morning. A lot of evilness would’ve been kicked out of their offices.

  2. The GMB union says workers do a difficult, dangerous job; with research showing more than 80 percent regularly suffer abuse, including being savaged in the neck by dogs,

Other than postmen/delivery drivers it is hard to imagine what job would risk potentially being attacked by dogs-especially being savaged in the neck by them.

  3. There was a brief period of time in the 80s where advisors were inaccessible to a belligerent dole-happy underclass due to bomb proof mesh screens and doors.

Why these were then removed defeats me. To be honest, Job Centres are complete an utter waste of money and time to both jobseeker and advisor in the age of the internet.

  4. The Police should arrest whoever is outside there for noise pollution. Seems to be the way with Unions these days-much like high street stores aimed at the yoof market-a boombox turned up to ear-splitting decibel level, blaring out ‘music’ while waving flags as they dance around.

Is the idea to make the lives of everybody in the vicinity a misery? Because it sure as hell is doing a good job of turning people from sympathetic supporters, into viewing them as a bunch of unruly yobs.
