Birchington Man Shed makes urgent call for new committee members

Birchington Man Shed

Birchington Man Shed is appealing for new committee members and Shedders to come forward and ensure the project’s survival.

The Shed, which has been running since 2021 and been at its home at Quex Craft Village since 2022, will have its annual meeting on June 11. But current committee members now need to stand down for various reasons and replacements are urgently needed.

The only requirement is that those on the committee become a member of Birchington Man Shed.

Man shed is for men and women over 55. Thursday afternoon is set aside for women.

Men attend Monday morning and afternoon, Wednesday and Thursday morning.

They engage in various activities, including model railway, wood working, pyrography, engraving, designing and making wood earrings.

The man shed urgently needs:

  • Chairman
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • At least two further committee members.

The committee positions are open to both men and women and needs to meet a minimum of three times a year.

Current treasurer Mike Kite said there have been difficulties since founder and Stephen Bryant passed away in December.

Mike has been fulfilling both treasurer and chairman duties but is unable to continue doing that.

He said: “Without a committee there is no way we can carry on, desperate times call for desperate measures and so we made it public.

“We have had three people looking to step up to the roles and have arranged meetings but we are still also looking for Shed members

“Having got this far since 2021, it would be a sad loss to Birchington should we be unable to form a committee and have no option but to close our doors for good, depriving the community and losing a valuable resource.”
