A road closure at The Square and Park Lane is in place until May 16 – although work is expected to take five days – as UK Power Networks attend to an electrical issue.

The road was closed yesterday (May 9) after a report of smoke coming from a man-hole, Police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the power firm attended.

The A28 Canterbury Road was closed at the junction with Park Lane. The Square is closed to traffic coming from Westgate and from Brooksend. Traffic is currently being diverted through Kent Gardens via Station Road. Park Lane is also closed off at The Square.

A signed diversion route has been put in place.

The incident includes a loss of electricity supply to some properties in the area.

A UK Power Networks spokesperson said: “Engineers are working as quickly as possible to restore electricity supplies to three customers in the Canterbury Road area of Birchington.

“A complex fault on an underground cable initially interrupted supplies to 27 customers between 9.12am and 10.10am yesterday (9 May). Engineers needed to turn off supplies to different groups of customers at different times to investigate and carry out repairs.

“Teams worked hard through to night and work is progressing to reconnect supplies to the remaining three properties as quickly and safely as possible. We apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused.”
