'Slippa' creates his Garbage Pail Kids characters at his Westgate home

At a home in Westgate weird, wacky and ever so slightly disgusting characters are being created for Topps trading cards USA.

Artist Jordan Gumbrell – aka Slippa Chervascus – is a designer of Garbage Pail Kids, a series of sticker trading cards originally released in 1985 and designed to parody the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, which were popular at the time.

The musician, who was part of hip hop band The Brewdelics, has been working on Topps cards since the covid lockdown in 2020 after sending the firm his portfolio of work.

The 37-year-old said: “I work doing sketches for them (Topps trading cards) but I did collect the cards, which are big in America.

“I was offering sketches for donations of cards and then did trades with some of the official artists and they said I should send the portfolio.

“I have been in the music scene for the past 20 years but I wanted to back off and do something different so put more focus (on art).

“The Garbage Pail Kids are a pop culture parody from the 80s, a  Cabbage Patch boys’ version doing disgusting things like picking their nose.”

Slippa brings to life characters from Adam Bomb to Sawing Sal, Blake Flake and bonus one off sketches’ that punters will find in selected lucky packs.

The artist, who lives with wife Siobhan, said: “It’s all very therapeutic and good fun and because I am a massive fan the nerd in me is pumped up to be working for them.”

Slippa will be one of the guests at a Kent Card Show in June alongside Pokemon actor Stuart Zagnit (the voice of Professor Oak) and Disney Lorcana artist for Elsa, Hades, Belle and Beast, Matthew Robert Davies.

The event, which is just the second convention for Slippa, takes place on  Saturday June 1st at the Ashford International Hotel from 9am to 5pm.

The show will also feature more than 100 vendor tables with trading cards, sports cards, comic books and more.

Stuart Zagnit will be appearing in costume with signing and photo opportunities, Matthew Robert Davies will host signings and sketches and Slippa Chervascus will be taking commissions and offering signings on the day.
