As part of their community action, the Pupil Leadership Team of Holy Trinity and St John’s CE Primary School in Margate completed a litter pick on the paths around the school.

The Pupil Leadership Team representatives, aged from 5 – 11 years old, used litter collecting equipment from Thanet District Council and were joined by Mayor of Margate Cllr Rob Yates.

Within 30 minutes, the children had collected a bag full of litter. Head pupil Amelia said: “I was shocked by the amount of litter we collected in such a short space of time.”

The Pupil Leadership team is made up of a representative from every class. They are the voices for their classes, bringing ideas of how to improve the school environment and how they can support their community.

The youngsters were keen to improve the local environment and with the help of headteacher Rob Garratt they arranged the litter pick this week.

The children are now keen to complete regular litter picks around the neighbourhood. They have also had the idea of each year group being allocated time to complete litter picks around the school grounds as a lot of rubbish blows in from the neighbouring streets.

Cllr Yates said; “A huge thanks to the pupils from Holy Trinity and St John’s for showing community spirit by carrying out litter picking around Margate streets. “The students picked up bits of glass, gloves and cigarette butts amongst other things using litter picking sticks and bags provided by TDC.

“We all know the hard work that TDC staff do keeping our streets clean, but community support for this is always appreciated and I send my thanks to Mr Garratt and the staff at the school for making this happen. ”
