Pioneering news service from Newington school

Newington newsletter presenters

A high-tech news service for children, families and friends is being rolled out at Newington Community Primary in Ramsgate.

The traditional fortnightly newsletter is now available in video format on the school’s website and social media, bringing important information to a wider audience.

The informative programme is presented in a lively and enthusiastic manner by Year 6 pupils who are the faces in front of the camera.

The idea is to offer information about the school to parents and the wider community in an easy to understand format. It is a celebration of school life and a way of developing further confidence in pupils who present the programme – many of whom have never presented or taken part in public speaking before.

Music teacher Warwick Eldred is overseeing the project. He explained: “The programme ‘School News’ is produced very quickly, over the period of 48 hours, with the pupils giving up their own lunchtimes and breaks to rehearse and perform in front of the camera.

“We are hoping to include all of the Year 6 pupils who would like to take part over the course of the year.

‘School News’ has been warmly received and is enjoyed as part of the pupils’ class assemblies as well as attracting hundreds of views online. We are looking forward to celebrating our school and the pupils’ successes in the coming months.”

Head Teacher Hannah Tudor praised the initiative. She said: “It is great way to further ensure that important information, news and achievements are made available to as wide an audience as possible.

“The team in front of the camera and behind the scenes is doing a fantastic job – it is great to see Newington continuing to be a pioneer in all aspects of our school community.”
