Ellington children dig in for planting and gardening workshop

Digging in

Children and teachers from Ellington Infant School joined Love Living Homes at its Pegwell Bay View development in Cliffsend for a special planting and gardening workshop to highlight the importance of caring for our local ecosystem.

The pupils gathered in the garden of the development’s show home and were treated to an educational talk from Jackie Young, a local horticultural expert from Youngs Nurseries. The children then put on their safety gear, and after each choosing their favourite polyanthus plant, selected their ideal planting spot outside the front of the homes. Jackie and the Love Living Homes team gave a demonstration on how to plant the polyanthus before the children were handed gloves and a trowel to get stuck into their own planting.

The children made their way back to the show home where they were invited to draw their own dream garden, taking inspiration from the morning’s activity. They were each gifted with a goody bag from construction partners, Jenner, along with a pot-your-own bulb kit from Youngs Nurseries and a packet of poppy seeds from Love Living Homes to continue their newly acquired skills at home.

Caroline Wheeler, Assistant Headteacher at Ellington, said: “What a great morning at Pegwell Bay View. The children loved choosing their own plants and being shown how to do it all themselves. Jackie’s talk was really interesting – for both the children and us adults – we’ll all be taking away some top tips from today’s workshop. Huge thanks to Love Living Homes for hosting us.”

Emily Geeson, Marketing Manager at Love Living Homes, said: “We wanted to not only bring the community together as we develop Pegwell Bay View, but also highlight the importance of preserving the environment where we live. It’s great to demonstrate the importance of planting schemes to younger generations.

“The children were fantastic and really got stuck into the activities. The front gardens look fabulous with the new plants in situ – I’m sure our buyers will be delighted. We’re thrilled to be a part of this local community, and we’d welcome Ellington Infant School back any time!”
