Ramsgate’s Discovery Planet team have received an award for innovation during a prestigious ceremony at the Institute of Physics in central London.

The award, given by the South East Physics Network, celebrated the long-term use of a shop unit in Ramsgate High Street where the team provides science workshops to schools and the community. The Discovery Planet shop HQ, is the first of its kind in the UK and has not only brightened up the street but has also enabled more than 4,500 visitors to take part in exciting science-based activities and learn about cutting edge research going on at the University of Kent.

Discovery Planet’s upcoming programme of events will be enriched over the coming year by a partnership with Discovery Park and other local businesses. This will enable residents to understand the practical applications of science and the employment opportunities on their doorsteps.

The programme of free events will kick off on Thursday and Friday 11th and 12th of October with workshops for schools about Solar Energy. The hands-on workshop has been designed in collaboration with SGS Energy based in Manston Business Park, which installs and provides advice on energy saving solutions.

Members of the public will be able to take part on Saturday 13th  October by dropping into DPHQ on the hour, every hour from 10am to 3pm, which is when the last session starts.

The 10am slot will be a special ‘quiet session’ for people who need a calmer environment. As usual participation is all free of charge, this time as a result of generous funding from the Royal Society of Chemistry.
