Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a man was assaulted in Margate and robbed of his mobile phone.

The robbery took place at around 11.30pm on Bank Holiday Monday (28 August).

A man in his 30s was sitting in the shelter in Marine Drive when he was approached by two men and a woman. Following a conversation with the group, he was then assaulted.

His mobile phone was stolen from him during the incident and found discarded later.

It was reported that members of the public intervened, allowing the victim to leave the area.

Officers attended the scene and a 34-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man of no fixed address were arrested on suspicion of robbery. They were released on bail until 23 November.

Detectives investigating the robbery would like to speak to the members of the public who helped the victim by intervening in the incident.

Witnesses and anyone with dash-cam footage taken in Marine Drive around the time of the robbery should call Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting 46/154872/23.

  1. A right scummy bunch hang out and sleep there. Abuse if you refuse to give them money. Sad its slowly being ripped apart just like the shelter by the rock. Now i just keep to the other side of the road. ” sort it out TDC please “

  2. I am truly shocked by the condition of the structure. I remember how nice it looked in the 1970s, a lovely spot to sit in the shade out of the sun, watching the world go by.

  3. Whilst I feel sorry for the person that was robbed, who in their right mind would go anywhere near that shelter? It’s in a terrible state (as are many of Margate’s shelters) and is slowly being dismantled by the homeless people that use it. Our seafront is a dump (check our Eastbourne for a good example). Those responsible at Thanet Council should hang their heads in shame for the way they treat our seafront heritage 😥
