The Romans Return weekend at Richborough Fort

Romans Return event at Richborough Fort

Romans will be returning to Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre next weekend.

Famous for witnessing the beginning and end of Roman rule in Britain, Richborough’s history will come to life over June 17-18 with Romans once again taking over the fort and putting on a spectacular display.

Having reopened to the public this April, Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre recently underwent a major representation project to bring the site’s history to life. Visitors have been able to explore a newly reconstructed 8m Roman gateway – built on the exact spot of an original fortification during the Roman invasion in AD 43 – as well as a new museum display, with previously unseen objects from the collection found at Richborough. Now the site will host its first re-enactment event in its recent history with The Romans Return at Richborough.

Visitors will be able to experience living history by cheering on their chosen Roman champion in the arena performances or discovering the clothes Roman people wore, the food they ate and the lives they led. They can also find out what it takes to be a Roman soldier with the Roman Legionary School.

Tim Benfield, Assistant Event Manager at English Heritage, said: “Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre is a hugely significant historic site, witnessing the start and end of Roman rule.

“Recently visitors have been able to explore the newly presented site – climbing the 8m gateway and imagining what the first Romans might have seen. Now we’re taking it one step further by bringing living history to the site with The Romans Return event.  There will be something for all ages to enjoy and we look forward to seeing our visitors cheering on their Roman champion in the spectacular arena performances.”
