The ScrapStore at East Kent Mencap site in Ramsgate gets ready to reopen

The ScrapStore reopens on June 14

The ScrapStore, based at East Kent Mencap’s Foresters Hall in Meeting Street, Ramsgate, is reopening following a refresh and essential building work on the listed building.

The grand reopening takes place on June 14 at 10am until noon, during Great Big Green Week which celebrates community action to tackle climate change.

The ScrapStore is an important green initiative that encourages people in Thanet to reduce, reuse, and recycle by donating unwanted craft products that are then sold on to others to get creative. All money raised goes directly to East Kent Mencap to support people with a learning disability.

Everyone is invited to come to the reopening and see the revamped store, meet the dedicated team of volunteers and enjoy refreshments and craft activities.

Fiona Wonford, GOLD Project Manager, said: “We are thrilled to be reopening our doors to The ScrapStore during the Great Big Green Week. The ScrapStore is such an important green initiative for our local community.

“We are passionate about protecting our planet and The ScrapStore is one small way we can actively make a difference to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

The ScrapStore provides valuable work experience and volunteer opportunities for people with a learning disability, enabling them to build a portfolio of skills with a view to finding work.

Katherine, GOLD (Getting On with Learning Difficulties) member has volunteered at The ScrapStore since January 2022. She said: “I love coming to The ScrapStore and have really enjoyed working with the other volunteers on the refresh. It is great to be part of the team, I have learnt so much and made some lovely friends. We hope you come to The ScrapStore and see it for yourself.”

Following the reopening The ScrapStore will be open every Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 2pm.
