Thanet scooter team scoops trophy at international endurance race

The Thanet Area Scooter Services riders took third place

A team from Thanet Area Scooter Services (T.A.S.S), based in Northdown Road, has scooped the third place trophy at a gruelling endurance race.

TASS boss Roger Lucas, who has been running the scooter repair business for 35 years, was joined by customers Roy Binks and John Chadwick to form the racing team with partner Carol Brunt and friend Keeley Chadwick taking on the pit crew role.

The international scooter endurance race involved two, eight hour rounds in the UK and a ten hour round in Magny Cours, France for riders on classic scooters.

Roger, from Ramsgate, said the team has been taking part in the races for around seven years but this is the first trophy win.

He said: “There were 40 teams from France, Germany, Italy, all over, it has quite big, international appeal.

“We had been doing the race in France as it only came to the UK in the last five years.

“It’s circuit racing where (organisers) British Scooter Endurance Club  BSEC use a ‘Le Mans’ start.”

The start involves so two members from each team – one to hold the scooter while the rider sprints across the track to the bike when the start flag is dropped in order to ride off. The aim is to still be going, and reach the finish line.

Scooter teams enter under four classes – Pro-race, race, road and club.

The TASS team were riding a 1970 Lambretta 240 in the race class with the final leg being held at Whilton Mill circuit Daventry.

They managed to overcome four crashes on the slippery track to make their way back into the top contenders.

Roger said: “The riders have to swap over every hour. We have come fourth and fifth before but this is the first time we have come third and got a trophy.”
