Birchington hairdresser makes the cut to win best new salon award

Rebecca Bushell has scooped a top regional prize

A little more than one year after setting up her own business, Birchington hairdresser Rebecca Bushell has scooped a top regional prize.

Rebecca, who runs Style 21 from her home, was named best new salon in the south east at the UK Hair and Beauty Awards last weekend.

The 27-year-old has been a hairdresser since 2011, doing her apprenticeship, barbering course and Level 3 qualifications while working at Keith Graham hairdressers in Ramsgate.

She then moved to Hair on the Square in Birchington but in January last year tookthe plunge to become her own boss.

Rebecca said: “I absolutely loved working with the girls at the salon (Hair on the Square) but thought I wanted to do this and started looking to buy somewhere when mum and dad said do it from our home.

“Working for myself has given me more confidence as a hairdresser. In the salon you ask others what they think about something but being on my own, it is just my understanding and you realise ‘yes, I am good at what I do.’

“I saw the awards come up on a sponsored  post on Instagram and just did it. I got into the finals and then you can decided whether to go to the red carpet event so I bought a couple of tickets.

“I got into the top ten and then on Saturday I came up as the winner for the south east.”

Rebecca says she is currently so busy she has a waiting list and is enjoying owning her own business.

She said: “Maybe in the future I will expand but at the moment I am quite happy as I am. I think it has been the best move I’ve made.”
