Enterprising dad rises to challenge to take on Birchington Village Bakery

A village dad is busy turning out loaves, cakes and buns as the new boss of a bakery shop in Birchington.

Hayden Irwin, 25, says the opportunity came up to take over Birchington Village Bakery and, with the help of family and friends, he decided to take the plunge.

The dad to four-year-old daughter Mia has several years experience working for others but is now his own boss.

He said: “Everything is freshly baked on site and it is all made on the premises.

“I specialise in bread and every day cakes but baking just comes naturally to me. I wasn’t really scared about taking on the shop, it was more excitement.”

Hayden got the keys in February but, after having to deal with some loose ends, finally held his grand opening on March 13,

Currently Hayden is working alone, doing everything from the baking to the serving and shop admin.

Current opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 9am to 2pm.
