Upton Junior School’s love of literacy added a fresh chapter with this year’s World Book Day celebration.
Children of all ages went to school dressed as a favourite story character or dressed in bright rainbow colours to celebrate the book Rain Before Rainbows by best-selling children’s author Smriti Halls.
They enjoyed a number of activities including reading, writing, art and PSHE (personal, social, health and economic education) centred on the uplifting tale about discovering optimism in the darkest of places. Earlier in the day during assembly they found out about the author’s background and what inspired her love of writing.
As part of the busy World Book Day programme, teachers swapped classes to share their favourite books with pupils they do not normally teach – and the school also embraced Upton’s Big Read that saw all 512 children sharing their favourite books with others.
Assistant Head of School Gemma Scarr is Head of English. She said: “It was a wonderful day full of the love of reading.
“Our teachers took part in a class swap to share one of their favourite stories with pupils they do not usually teach which gave the classes a different perspective.
“One of the highlights was the Great Big Upton Read which included all 512 children bringing a book along to share with others from across the school.
“We celebrated books and the pleasure we derive from them. It was delightful seeing all the children dressed up and seeing all the learning they had completed based on the beautiful Rain Before Rainbows story.
“Reading and the love of reading is at the heart of Upton’s curriculum and it was another special opportunity to be immersed in a wonderful past time. ”
