A two vehicle crash near Cliffsend has led to the road being closed both ways this morning (August 13).

Kent Police was called at 6.48am to the collision at Hengist Way.

Officers are at the scene and one driver has been taken to a London hospital with serious injuries not believed to be life threatening. A second person has been taken to a local hospital and has since been arrested on suspicion of driving offences.

Road closures are in place while the incident is attended to. Motorists are being diverted through Sandwich and Pegwell.

Heavy traffic is building on surrounding routes. AA traffic alerts say the Sandwich Road is closed both ways between A256 Ramsgate Road (Ebbsfleet roundabout) and Foads Lane.

  1. This sadly is getting a daily occurrence.

I have said a thousand times the driving standard in thanet is a disgrace. It get worse by the day. By far the worst area that I drive in.

  2. This was around 7am so not even busy.

Standard of driving is disgusting these days and maybe a retest every few years or stronger penalties for the reoffending idiots… ie lose their licence for life!

    • If this government had not got rid of 22,000 police officers, then there would be more available.
It seems to be an attitude of mind. Perfectly normal, reasonable people, ince they get behind a wheel, lose all common sense. For example, yesterday two vehicles drove into my (narrow) street, one from the bottom, and one from the top. They met in the middle. Neither would give way, so cue lots of shouting, swearing and horn blowing. By the time one of them did back down, they could have been half way up the A299.
It’s worse if there’s just one car. The road is used as a rat run to avoid a nearby junction. In order to beat the lights, drivers go at horrific speeds.

  3. We were on the road heading towards Sandwich and saw one vehicle badly damaged and the air ambulance arriving. That was about 8.30 and the traffic was all being sent via Cliffsend Road.

  4. Every day now another RTA. I’d anyone taking an active Stance? I fear not. We have the Police, TDC, KCC, all responsible for managing the County yet none are capable of so doing. Speed enforcement would be a start as would a check on every vehicle in Thanet forMOT. TAX. Insurance, driver’s licence etc. Its all on computer. Give the project to the local schools if our incompetent bureaucracy cannot deal with it..enough is enough. Let’s start with every motorist driving at 20 mph just to focus all minds on this carnage.

    • As a nation we’ve gone down the route of ignoring lots of crime, shoplifting, littering, drugs and many motoring offences are now dealt with by way of automatic fines. As a result there’s a culture amongst a significant proportion of society that they can do what they want anytime they want. Society has also decided that peison doesn’t work and so there is little or no meaningful sanction for all but the most serious wrongdoers. Mototring offences are a particular case in point, just about nothing other than incarceration will stop someone driving if they want to , they’ll just keep racking up fines and bans until at some point they coomit a serious enough offence to be put away.
A waste of time fining thousands of people for minor transgressions which would be very unlikely to result in any harm to others. Unless you are going to make the consequences harsh enough to stop people breaking these rules. Problem then comes what do you do with those that do cause harm or are perpetual offenders? How many prisons are you willing to build ? How much do you spend ? Someone somewhere in the corridors of power haas done the calculations as to the cost/benefit of dealing with all sorts of issues and it determines the society we have today.
Ask a traffic officer what happens if they have active anpr in their car, the answer is it flags up vehicles just about continually , the police and criminal justice system have no way of dealing with it all. Just drive at night and see the number of defective lights on vehicles, or the number of e scooters , people on phones, and they are just the more visible offences.
There’s an issue with unlicensed foreign drivers , they don’t speak english and so can’t take a driving test , so what do they do, just drive anyway. The DVLA love cliftonville , they can use up their stock of wheel clamps in a morning disabling untaxed vehicles, how many others shouldn’t be on the road?
So many things that could be done that it’s pointless the 20mph theory being put into practice as it won’t stop those who have no regard for the law and only alienates the law abiding majority.
The uk has roughly 3 fatalities a year caused by dogs and around 7500 dog related injuries requiring hospital admission. But no calls for mandatory insurance and licensing , as it’d be too unpopular. And that’s without the cost to nation of dealing with dog mess. It can’t be an inconsequential amount to TDC providing bins, emptying them , cleaning pavements and disposing of the waste.

      • But the introduction of more 20mph zones would make more people safer, as most drivers (if LC is correct) are law-abiding and considerate toward other road users.

    • It was meant as another example of an issue where problems have become socially acceptable and as such no efforts are made to prevent them.

  5. Its like the wild West now. The punishment or chance of it are low enough for this to happen daily. Something more needs to be done, getting hurt or dying should not be on our minds when we get into our cars.

  6. I AM 78 I HAVE A ROTTI WHITCH I WALK AT 5.15 IN THE MORN AND AT 10AM SOME TIMES IT IS HARD TO GET ACROSS THE ROAD ILOOK BOTH WAYS TO MAKE SURE NO CARS COMING ICAN SEE 1/2 A MILE UP THE ROAD ONE AS A NORMAL DAY I WAS 3/4 ACROSS WHEN BLACK RANGE ROVER CAME FROM NOWHERE IT CAME TEARING TOWARDS ME I HAD MY ROTTI ON HER SHORT HE BRAKED 4FT FROM ME MY DOG WAS GETTING SCARD JUMPING UP @ DOWN HE JUST THREW HIS ARMS BY THEN I JUST GOT ACROSS WHEN HE STOPPED HIS BRAKES WHERE SCREAMING

  7. Another road traffic collision /crash (rtc), one a day keeps the police at play, seriously for a small an area as this the amount of rtc,s happening in the Thanet area is getting crazy, each one of them most likely could have been avoided with better driving skills, 1 in a local hospital and arrested under suspicion of driving offences, and another taken to a London hospital with serious injuries, St George’s are soon going to be filled with people from from Thanet with the amount going there hope they are going to be OK with treatment, this is more proof that we need a specialised road traffic policing team like their was set up in Broadstairs and got disbanded, things have been getting worse since being disbanded,
