Hornets Boxing Club bid to raise cash for young members to take part in Lonsdale MTK Box Cup

Young boxers and coaches from Hornets Boxing Club

A boxing club in Ramsgate is hoping to raise £1,000 to take seven members to an international competition next month.

The Hornets, based in Leigh Road, hope to take seven young people to the Lonsdale MTK Box Cup in Penrith which is an elite-level amateur competition with contenders travelling from numerous countries to take part.

Chaz Butters is the youngest contender from Hornets at 13 years, but has already competed at the event over the last two years winning a title both times.

Josh Ring, 18, will be returning for his second year after narrowly missing out on a title last year but coming away with a silver medal and Chloe Zannetti, 16, will be the club’s first female boxer to enter the contest this year.

Other competitors hoping to have their first trip to the box cup are David, Alfie and Rhys, all 15, Kieron, 22, and Callum, 25,

Boxers will travel from areas including Spain, Sweden, Scotland ,Ireland and Australia.

Club coach Maxine Butters said: “The boxers have been training very hard, doubling up sessions and doing extra strength conditioning work and runs. They have a great team of coaches from the Hornets Boxing Club training them and lots of support from their team mates.”

The club hopes to raise £1,000 towards transport, accommodation and entry costs.

The event takes place from April 2-5.
