A Ramsgate teenager will take part in a five mile pyjama walk this Summer to raise charity funds in memory of her grandad.

Chardonnay Nicholson, 16, wants to raise money for Pilgrims Hospices which cared for her grandad Melvyn Hodges in 2004.

Chardonnay was just one year old when Melvyn passed away. Although she didn’t have much time with her grandad, she enjoys looking back at photographs. She said: “My mum has a photo album that I often look through. I smile when I hear stories about what an amazing man he was.”

When he became ill, the compassionate care Melvyn received from Pilgrims was incredibly valued by his family. Chardonnay said: “Pilgrims were amazing to my grandad when he was in the hospice. They gave him the best possible care anyone could want. They were so supportive, polite and helpful. They had several conversations with my family members and were happy to answer any questions and make them feel reassured.”

Chardonnay will take part in the Ramsgate Pyjama walk on July 11 to raise funds for the next person who needs care and help ensure that more families can access vital hospice services.

She added: “I chose to support Pilgrims because they mean so much to my family. I love what they do to help families like us that have experienced such a tragic loss. This is so important to me as it’s my grandad’s birthday on July 11. I am severely asthmatic but this won’t stop me doing it.”

Donations all go to Pilgrims Hospices.
