Quick-thinking councillor jumps into action following Birchington crash

Postman and councillor Gary Taylor gave first aid at the scene

A quick-thinking councillor stepped in to give first aid to a driver injured during a crash in Birchington this morning (September 24).

Dane Valley councillor and postman Gary Taylor was in his mail van on the Canterbury Road when two cars were involved in a crash at around 11am.

One of the vehicles hit a verge bollard, saving it from careering into the wall of a property.

Cllr Taylor jumped out of his van and took the keys from the ignition of the car before administering first aid.

He said: “We were behind in our Royal Mail van. I ran across the road. I could not open the driver’s door so managed to get in passenger side and lean over and switch ignition off. I gave first aid to male driver until emergency services arrived as he had a head injury.”

Kent Police confirmed officers were called to the crash.

A spokesperson said: “Officers are attending the scene in Canterbury Road, near the junction with King Edward Road in Birchington, along with the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

“One person has been taken to a local hospital. Work is ongoing to clear the road.”

Traffic is being diverted up Quex View Road. Two fire crews also attended the scene.
