Man in custody after damage rampage at three Birchington businesses

A 32-year-old man has been arrested today (April 20) after damage was caused at three busy Birchington businesses and object hurled at passing cars and shoppers.

At 8.45am police attended Station Road, Birchington, and arrested the man on suspicion of criminal damage, theft and affray.

He is alleged to have smashed a shop window at Costa Coffee, damaged barriers and stock at the Co-Op, caused more damage at the Post Office and and thrown objects at passing cars and pedestrians.

Witnesses say staff at Costa and the Co-Op had to protect customers inside during the incident.

The man remains in custody while enquiries continue.
