Dog walkers advised to keep pets away from dead seal at Louisa Bay

Dog walkers are advised to keep their pets away from a dead seal that is yet to be removed from Louisa Bay beach in Broadstairs.

The seal has been on the beach for several days. Thanet council has been informed.

A spokesperson for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR)  said: “ It is wise to keep all children and dogs away as when they are decomposing, there is a lot of bacteria involved.

“There is a natural mortality rate for seals from old age and sickness. However, the local populations have been increasing over the years, so while it looks like we are getting more washed up, it is still only around the same percentages. So a larger population means a bigger mortality rate. This year, all the pups we have rescued have survived.”

The BDMLR only deals with live seals. To report a deceased seal email [email protected]
