Students from East Kent College hit the streets of Broadstairs on Thursday with bags and litter-pickers as part of The Great British Spring Clean.
The event was organised by Broadstairs Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) – made up of partners including Kent County Council, Kent Police, Kent Fire and Rescue Services, Thanet District Council and local retailers.
Volunteers wore distinctive CAP hi-vis vests and the Co-op, Waitrose and Asda donated litter pickers, bags and water for the volunteers. Their staff were also out in force, along with other CAP partners.
Volunteers aimed to clean up Victoria Gardens, West Cliff Promenade and Pierremont Park focusing on known alcohol litter spots.
CAPs are made up of partnerships between retailers, local authorities, police, schools, neighbourhood groups and health providers, working together to empower communities to tackle alcohol-related harm to young people and improve the quality of life for residents.
The Broadstairs CAP was set up in 2017 and has already made an impact in the town, building strong relationships with local schools and businesses.
Neil Butcher, from KCC Trading Standards, co-ordinator of the CAP, said: “CAP is all about bringing the community together to tackle local problems, and The Great British Spring Clean is a wonderful way for us to work together to improve our local environment.”
