It has been an eight year wait but Vintage Film Night with the Friends of Shell Grotto is back.
The first film night was hosted in 2010 and sold out so quickly extra dates had to be added.
Now it has been revived and will be held at the Walpole Bay Hote in Cliftonville on November 9.
Gems in the programme of publicity films spanning the 20th Century include a look at Margate in 1925, Ramsgate in 1972 -including dancing at Nero’s – and wrestling at the Oval also in the 70s.
Margate takes a starring role on the night, with supporting performances from Ramsgate and Canterbury.
The evening will feature Nick Dermott as compere, an interval bar and ice creams and popcorn will be available.
There will also be some surprise footage and if a new treasure surfaces it will be screened, so the programme is subject to change.
Programme so far
Magical Margate, dating from around 1925, and very rarely seen on the big(ish) screen;
At the Sign of the Ram and the Gate, a fictional tale of a Fleet Street journo sent to convalesce in Ramsgate in 1957;
The Canterbury Tour, offering a glimpse of everyday life from the 1920s;
Ramsgate: A Picture to Remember featuring dancing at Nero’s in 1972!
A Date With the Sun, a 1960s Margate film narrated by the great Kenneth Horne;
All Go Margate, from 1970, with Michael Aspel watching the wrestling at the Oval.
All proceeds from the night will go to the Friends’ Roundel Project, which was launched in 2012 to replace areas of lost shell mosaic in the Grade 1 listed Grotto. So far, through sponsorship, fundraising and donations some 32 roundels have been funded.
