One man remains in custody following burglary arrest and bomb squad attendance in Cliftonville

One man remains in custody and another has been released on bail following a police search of a Cliftonville flat that led to the evacuation of the whole block yesterday (August 22).

Kent Police searched the address in Sandhurst Place at 5.20pm ofollowing the arrest of two men on suspicion of burglary.

The pair had been detained by officers at around 11am in connection with a burglary at a business premises in Northdown Road, Broadstairs on 12 January.

While searching the property in Sandhurst Place unidentified materials were found by officers and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was called to attend and fully assess the items, which have since been taken away. Kent Fire and Rescue Service was also in attendance.

As a precaution a number of nearby properties were evacuated until around 11.30pm when residents were able to return to their homes. Some families said they were not alerted to the readmittance to the flats.

One of the men arrested, aged 33 from Margate, has been released on bail until 14 September.

Officers continue to carry out enquiries at the scene whilst the second Margate man, aged 25, remains in police custody.

An MoD spokesman said: We can confirm that the EOD team attended an address in Cliftonville on Margate on August 22, to assist police in their investigation. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time as this is an on-going police investigation.”
