Thanet community news: School fun, Academy FM and rotary update

The bus presentation to Bradstow Scchool

Bradstow School

Bradstow residential special school has been presented with a Variety Sunshine coach thanks to fundraising by the Bingo Association.

The key was presented to head teacher Sarah Dunne by Alastair Stewart – Head of Strategy and Development at the Bingo Association – on Thursday (June 21).

The first journey took place that day with a group of young people and staff travelling to Thriftwood Scout Camp and Activity Centre, where others were already on their school journey.  They participated in exciting activities such as canoeing, rafting and archery, and having a barbeque.

The new minibus will be used for:

Work Experience

Community Events

Swimming

Bowling

Cinema

Restaurants

Park Runs

Sporting Events

Day trips

Horse Riding

Sailing

Events at other schools

Concerts

Parks

Zoo and Animal Parks

Specialist Workshops

And many more educational and fun outings!

A Bradstow school spokesman said: “We needed to replace our 10 year old Sunshine Coach. The new coach will be used daily to allow our children and young people to access to the wider community as a group; to provide access to many of the school`s external projects, as well as after school and weekend activities.

“We are very grateful to Variety and the Bingo Association for their generosity in providing our new mini bus.”

St Laurence-in-Thanet Junior Academy

Pupils and staff at St Laurence Junior Academy are putting their running shoes on and enthusiastically tackling “a mile a day”. Every day, pupils and staff are uniting in 15 minutes continuous exercise through walking and jogging. The aim of the initiative is to increase fitness levels, reduce health related issues, improve concentration in lessons and most importantly have fun. Pupils and staff are already seeing the benefits and eagerly look forward to getting outside and being active.

St Lawrence College juniors

Pupils at St Lawrence College Junior School in Ramsgate had an unusual and exciting visitor to the school.

Paula, the Polar Bear, who is currently based at Turner Contemporary, paid a surprise visit to the playground at morning break time.  As part of the ongoing Learning Partnership between the school and the gallery, the school helped with the recent crowdfunding campaign to bring the bear to Margate for the summer, raising awareness of environmental issues.

Paula can be seen at Turner Contemporary on selected days throughout July and August https://turnercontemporary.org/exhibitions/paula-the-polar-bear
