A new business is set to open in Margate’s Old Town

A new lease of life for 3 Lombard Street

A new business will be opening in Margate’s Old Town next month.

Sew by the Sea is taking over the former Qing Art shop at 3 Lombard Street.

The creative retail enterprise will stock dressmaking fabrics, patterns and haberdashery supplies. It will also host weekly sewing and knitting classes in the large basement workshop below the shop.

Business owner Jennie Ward says she is excited by the prospect of the new venture.

She said: “ I worked for the NHS for 25 years and have a degree in management. After leaving about 3 years ago, I felt that I wanted a change of direction and became a very keen sewist.

“I noticed that Margate was lacking a specialist sewing shop and thought the Old Town would provide an ideal location. This seemed a perfect opportunity to combine my interest in sewing and the skills from my business degree.

“I also plan to bring like-minded sewers together with a ‘sewcial’ morning every Wednesday, where machines will be provided for sewers to work on their own projects whilst enjoying a cuppa and a chat.”

Everyone is invited to come to the opening on May 7 and enjoy a glass of wine between 2pm and 5pm. Visitors will be able to browse the extensive range of stock and enjoy 20% off all fabrics.

May 18 – learn to knit
May 19th – Make a lampshade
May 26 – know your sewing machine
June 16 – make a bamboo handle bag
