Politics and music promised at Tom Thumb Theatre’s Attila the Stockbroker gig

Gig organiser Clive Armstrong wants more acts to get involved

An appeal for left wing musicians and venues has gone out from the organiser of an Attila the Stockbroker gig at Tom Thumb Theatre on Thursday, April 26.

Show organiser Clive Armstrong, who says he joined the Labour Party being after inspired by Jeremy Corbyn’s politics, has set up a group called Red Thanet Entertainment. He is now calling for more people to get involved.

Clive says the gig in Cliftonville will be “Poetry Punk, ranting verse and trash mandola” from a left-wing performer who has entertained audiences all over the world, runs his own music and real ale festival and is a regular at Glastonbury.

Attila was heavily involved in Red Wedge, a collective of musicians, including Billy Bragg, Paul Weller and Jimmy Somerville, which formed in 1985 and attempted to engage young people with politics leading up to the 1987 General Election, in the hope of ousting the Tory government of Margaret Thatcher.

He is a sharp tongued, high energy, social surrealist rebel poet and songwriter. His themes are topical, his words hard hitting and his politics unashamedly radical.

Support comes from the much-travelled John Forrester singing songs of travel, adventure, lust, discovery, love and the weather!

Maidstone based Forrester combines an unshowy guitar style with a warm, open hearted voice to weave together folk-rock with an Americana feel.

Clive, a member of North Thanet Constituency Labour Party and Margate branch Labour Party based in Northdown Road, said: “I’ve always been a political animal, I love music and I’m interested in getting like-minded people together.

“I’m appealing for more people to get on board and suggest venues and musicians. The aim is to engage people in left politics, some people will come to a gig who wouldn’t dream of going on a march or coming to a political meeting. Others will come for the music and that’s good as well – live music is a good thing in the area.”

Tickets for the show at the Eastern Esplanade, Cliftonville, theatre are priced at £8 and are available from ww.wegottickets.com/event/431033

Gig starts at 7pm.
