Broadstairs bid to tackle plastic waste

Tackling plastic waste

Tackling plastic waste is the subject of a forum to be held in Broadstairs next week.

More than 70 businesses and organisations, both local and national, will meet at The Pavilion on March 27 for a reuse, recycle and reduce waste event.

Broadstairs Town Team has organised the gathering with the aim of discussing ideas, such as reusing bottles, scrapping plastic straws and bags and raising awareness of the issue.

Town Team trustee Wendy Carr said :‘Working together is the best way we can all make a difference in Broadstairs, in Thanet and in turn, to our precious planet. We are a tiny team, but know that so many people are passionate about these important issues locally, and are certain that as a community we can all come together and collectively tackle them and make a difference’

Debra Earl, from Verrey’s Café and restaurant in Broadstairs High Street, is one of four town businesses that offer free water bottle refills.

She said: “We, along with a few other local cafes already offer free water bottle refills. It’s a tough time for our town centre businesses, we know. What we would love to see is the whole issue of excess waste, packaging and explore how we can all look at improving the situation together.

“There are also many energy saving measures we can all look into as individuals too. Small acts always grow into something bigger and the changes we can make will also help our margins and spread the ‘shop local’ message.”

The event takes place at 3pm, registration at 2.30pm
