Some 20 firefighters are currently at the scene of a blaze in Birchington.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to a fire in the roof of a detached bungalow in Cunningham Crescent at 11.04am.

Around 20 firefighters and four fire engines have been sent to the scene and crews wearing breathing apparatus, are tackling the blaze using main jets, hose reels and a thermal imaging camera. The roof and solar panels are fully alight.

There are no reports of any casualties. It is believed the couple who live at the address and their three dogs got themselves out of the property. However, it appears there has been extensive damage to the bungalow and many possessions have been lost in the incident.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

UPDATE: Crews have carried out a salvage operation and a Red Cross vehicle has also been sent to provide emotional and practical support to the residents.
