A tiny tortoise is missing following a house burglary in Birchington.
The break in took place yesterday in the Minnis Bay area some time between 11.15am and noon.
Today owner Jenny Campbell discovered that one of her 18 baby torts is gone.
The tortoise, which is eight-weeks-old, is thought to have been taken off in a butter dish that is also missing from the property.
Jenny is appealing for help in tracking the baby down.
In a post on social media she said: “We’ve now discovered that the scumbags that burgled my house in Birchington yesterday took one of my baby torts. That explains why they took my butter dish, to transport it in!
“They need proper care, heat lamps etc. If you see or hear of anybody trying to sell a baby tort please let me know.”
Certification from DEFRA is required to buy and sell the Ibera spur thighed tortoise.
Jewellery, including rings. and a pair of Prada and a pair Chanel sunglasses were also taken.
A Kent Police spokesman said: “Kent Police is investigating a reported burglary at a property in St Mildred’s Avenue, Birchington.
“The incident is alleged to have occurred on Friday 13 October between 11.10am and 12.15pm.
“Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting reference 13-0537. Alternatively contact Kent Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
