Thousands of people visited Ellington Park in Ramsgate at the weekend for the Battles for Victory event.

The military-themed event included the rare chance to see the only big band performing the music of Glenn Miller that has direct family links to the musician will take place at the Battle for Victory event in Ramsgate.

John Miller is the nephew of big band leader Glenn who disappeared when the plane he was in went down while flying over the English Channel in 1944.

The performance on Sunday was the only one scheduled for the band this Summer.

Other attractions included a military and vintage vehicle display, wartime re-enactors, stalls, bars, barbecue and a NAAFI wagon and vintage funfair and miniature steam engine rides.

There was also a voice message sent by wartime sweetheart dame Vera Lynn.

Organiser Clive Richards said: “We had a great weekend with re-enactment groups, military vehicles and trade stands.

“There wasn’t a dry eye in the park when we received a voice message sent to us from Dame Vera Lynn, which was followed by the amazing John Miller Orchestra. It was perfect weather to dance in the park.”
