Movie legend Michael Caine is filming in Margate

Mega film star Sir Michael Caine is in Margate for a film shoot.

The veteran actor, who last filmed on the isle for the 2001 film Last Orders with Ray Winstone and Bob Hoskins, was spotted on the Stone Pier.

The crew revealed they are shooting scenes for a film about the Hatton Garden robbery which took place in April 2015 and was carried out by a gang of elderly crooks.

Night in Hatton Garden is due to be released in 2018. Posting to facbook The Isle of Thanet News follower Tracey Gregory revealed movie star Ray Winstone has also been spotted shooting scenes for the film.

Jim Broadbent and Michael Gambon also have lead roles in the film.

On 9 March 2016, at Woolwich Crown Court, three members of the gang, John “Kenny” Collins, Daniel Jones and Terry Perkins, were found guilty of conspiracy to commit burglary and were each given a seven-year prison term.

Carl Wood and William Lincoln were found guilty of the same offence and also one count of conspiracy to conceal, convert or transfer criminal property, after trial. Lincoln was also given a seven-year sentence, and Wood was jailed for six years.

Hugh Doyle was found guilty of concealing, converting or transferring criminal property. He was jailed for 21 months, suspended for two years.

Finally, the ringleader, Brian Reader, was sentenced to six years and three months in jail on 21 March 2016.

The eighth man, Jon Harbinson, was found not guilty and discharged.

The crew and Michael Caine, famous for his distinctive cockney accent, were caught on camera by Margate resident John Cripps.

Sir Michael and fellow actor Charlie Cox, from the Marvel TV series, were also caught on film by Frank Leppard Photography.

The locations team for the production has been working with Thanet council.

A film about the heist – Hatton Garden Job – was also released in April, starring Phil Daniels and Larry Lamb, formerly of Eastenders.
